DoubtingThomas
Aurélien Rivière, better known as DoubtingThomas, has built a reputation as a leading figure in the global underground music scene. His career has been defined by a constant evolution, driven by a deep curiosity and a passion for creating music that resonates both emotionally and intellectually. Beginning in the 1990s with downtempo, trip-hop, and ambient compositions, his sound has since evolved into the dancefloor-driven material he is known for today.
Having spent nearly two decades in London and Berlin, Aurélien was shaped by the energy of industrial warehouses, underground raves, and the raw aesthetics of urban landscapes. These influences are reflected in his distinctive sound, which blends minimalism with soulful depth. Now based in Toulouse, France, he draws inspiration from nature, creating music that balances thoughtfulness with vibrancy. Drawing on a broad range of influences, from ambient and jazz to IDM and funk, Aurélien’s work transcends genre. His discography features releases on respected labels such as Soul Jazz Records, Safari Electronique, and Lessizmo:r, alongside collaborations with 2020 Vision and Eastenderz. In addition to his own productions, his versatility is showcased in his compositions for award-winning documentaries, his collaboration with The Soundwalk Collective on Patti Smith’s Peradam, and scores for film and TV with Universal Publishing and Cezame Music Agency.
Aurélien’s live performances stand out for their immersive, hardware-driven approach, blending drum machines, synthesizers, and guitar pedals to create complex, textured soundscapes. Over the past decade, DoubtingThomas has performed on 6 continents and at nearly 200 events, including key performances at ReSolute in New York, The BPM Festival in Mexico, and prominent clubs like Rex Club in Paris and Fuse Club in Brussels. His festival appearances include standout events like Subsonic Music Festival in Australia, Garbicz Festivalin Poland, and Dour Festival in Belgium, connecting with audiences in both intimate and large-scale settings.
Beyond live performances, Aurélien channels his creativity into a variety of recording projects. His downtempo collaborative project D.O.T.S evolved into the more experimental The Promises, reflecting his continued push to explore new sonic territory. Based in Toulouse, he continues to break new ground, bringing deeply personal and unconventional ideas into his music. His work also extends into art installations and other creative collaborations, all centered around his belief in “intelligent electronic music.” For Aurélien, success is about crafting unforgettable experiences that resonate with audiences. Whether in intimate clubs or at major festivals, his performances offer a unique journey that leaves a lasting impact. Now partnering with The Nite Owls, Aurélien brings a refreshing, authentic energy to every event, making him a perfect fit for any festival or club looking to offer something truly special.
