100HZ
London based 100Hz has been producing music since 1989, back when they were selling white labels from the back of their car, formed by the original members Lee Renacre, James Chapman and Dorant Walker. The first records, Low Frequency Overload and Catching Spiders were released on Optimism Records and sold incredibly well for the time, getting them into the national music charts with a house track!
The musical style is definitely on the funkier side of House and Techno, with twinges of sinister vocals, odd beat patterns and poly rhythmic analog elements. According to Mixmag in 1997, Lee Renacre was included among other UK producers in the first ever article about Tech House, they were regarded as the pioneers of the new musical style that was to create an entirely new genre of dance music. At that time Lee started a small record label called Format Records.
They have celebrated countless record releases with some top classic UK labels of the 90's including Pacific Records, Rumore Records, Eukahouse, Rehab and Oblong Records, and in the 2010’s 100Hz had again been in the spotlight with a resurgence of tracks coming out with some of the best Italian and European labels including Bosconi Records, Imprints Records, Slow Life, Veniceberg, Howl Records and Logistic Records as well as Lumbago, Mriya Records and Mulen Germany, and more recent releases with Constant Sound, Curtea Veche and Amphia to name just a few. Back in 2017 Lee launched his own label called Modugroove, the first release EP01, was called Modulation, which was an insight into the wonderful world of modulating synthesis and the second called Klon, some tracks were from an improvised live jam with some good friends.
In 2019 Lee started another musical venture called PUSHER with Subwax. this was to be his Drug Music series, a stripped-down Techno affair and a departure from his typical Hz 90's style. The aim was to Push the genre with different time signatures and bring a real innovative edge to Techno.
100Hz has a long track record of live performances from dirty house parties and weird underground clubs, including in the early days The End club in London to the epic outdoor raves like Raindance and Exit festival in Serbia, and more recently with 3 appearances at Berlin’s mighty Tresor and for a second time at this year’s 2023 edition of Waking Life festival in Portugal. 100Hz are consistently working on abstract new material and pushing the boundaries of sound and structure.
